Alberto Guadagnini is a Full Professor of Hydraulic and Water Engineering and Vice Rector for Research at the Politecnico di Milano, where he earned his Degree in Civil Engineering and his PhD in Hydraulic Engineering. He has also served as Director of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering.
His main awards and recognitions include the 2024 Henry Darcy Medal from the European Geosciences Union, the 2024 InterPore Medal for Porous Media Research from the International Society for Porous Media, and election as an International Member of the United States National Academy of Engineering in 2024. He was the recipient of the Chaire Gutenberg and Prix Gutenberg 2018, awarded by Cercle Gutenberg and Region Grand-Est, France, for research on climate change and the water cycle in the Upper Rhine Basin and was elected a Member of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts in 2021.
He is Chief Executive Editor of Hydrology and Earth System Sciences, published by the European Geosciences Union, Associate Editor of Water Resources Research, published by the American Geophysical Union, and member of the Editorial Board of PNAS Nexus, published by the National Academy of Sciences of the United States. The author and co-author of more than 200 publications in international journals, his main research activities focus on qualitative and quantitative aspects of flow and transport processes across porous media (from nano- to field-scale), groundwater resources systems, and underground energy resources. He has established an internationally recognized research group focusing on porous media across scales (www.mipore.polimi.it).
