The scientific research of Professor Giuseppe Allegra has received national and international recognition at the highest levels. A student of Nobel Prize winner Giulio Natta, he initially devoted himself to the development of crystallographic methods for determining the structure of polymers and organometallic complexes; his pioneering contribution in these fields was decisive, and indeed forms the basis of a large part of the software currently used for the analysis of diffraction data.
His subsequent research in the field of conformational statistics and macromolecule dynamics led to the foundation of a school of statistical physics of polymers of international level. The results of his studies are documented in about 230 scientific papers published in leading international journals. He is still an active researcher and continues to receive invitations and to present his work at international conferences.
Giuseppe Allegra was also the first president of the Italian Macromolecules Association, president of the Italian Crystallography Association, member of scientific councils of various national and international institutions and editor of important international scientific journals. In 2003 he was elected a member of the Accademia dei Lincei.
After winning the post of professor of Structural Chemistry at the University of Trieste in 1970, in 1973 Giuseppe Allegra became Full Professor of Chemistry at the Politecnico di Milano, where he was also engaged in institutional activities as a member of the Board of Governors of the Academic Senate.
