Professor Pietro Luigi Cavallotti was a professor at Politecnico di Milano for 44 years and in recent years has been a leading figure in the world of electrochemistry and metallurgical chemistry, in Italy and abroad. His contribution to the field of Surface Science and Technology has brought Politecnico di Milano to a status of acknowledged national and international supremacy. This work has always been carried out with a focus on industry as well, where he has worked actively to contribute to technology transfer and the innovation of small and medium-sized companies in the sector, including through his 20 patents.
However, he has never lost sight of his role as a researcher, as evidenced by over 200 scientific publications in national and international journals and by more than 180 publications in conference proceedings.
This activity may also implicitly be measured through the numerous awards he has received, among which we can mention the IBM Italia award for patents and collaboration, the Johnson Matthey IMF medal for best article on the electrodeposition of precious metals, the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Oberflächentechnik DGO award for International Cooperation, the Distinguished Service Award (Gold Award) of the Korean Institute of Surface Engineering, the Korean Institute of Surface Engineering Plenary Conference award and the Hothersall Institute Metal Finishing Award and Medal.
Professor Cavallotti passionately held courses in metallurgy, electrochemistry and surface engineering in the field of chemical and materials engineering. He has been deeply involved in institutional activities as President of the Materials Engineering Degree Programme, Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Industrial Process Engineering, President of the Materials Engineering Study Programme, Co-ordinator of the PhD in Materials Engineering and Member of the Doctorate Board of Politecnico di Milano.
