Professor Luigi Amerio, research assistant since 1938, was appointed assistant professor of Mathematical Analysis on 10 November 1947 in Genoa and transferred to Politecnico di Milano on 1 November 1949: first to Mathematical Analysis, subsequently passing to Mathematical Analysis III, and then Mathematical Methods for Engineering in 1979. He therefore worked at universities for 50 years, mostly at Politecnico with particular dedication to the Institution, carrying out an intense teaching activity which led him to introduce new and advanced mathematics courses in the Faculty of Engineering, and leading prestigious research work that resulted in him fillingthe School with high-value students, 10 of whom went on to become full professors.

He is a member of important scientific associations and is currently also Vice-President of the Istituto Lombardo di Scienze e Lettere. He was also director of the Institute for twenty years, which later became the Department of Mathematics. Professor Amerio's work was also decisive in maintaining a high academic quality at Politecnico di Milano in particularly difficult times and he also made important contributions to the organisation of study plans at the Faculty of Engineering and related reforms.
