Missions and goals

The Bachelor programme in Interaction Design is set within the broad field of interactive artefacts, both digital and physical. The programme focuses on the design of digital interfaces, products, and environments that integrate electronics, harness computational power, and adopt Internet of Things systems, leveraging Big Data and artificial intelligence algorithms. While complementing traditional Design courses, this programme stands out for its particular emphasis on the digital dimension, providing both specialised and cross-disciplinary skills.

At the heart of the programme are design disciplines, with project-based workshops serving as the primary environment for acquiring these skills. Humanities play a crucial role in fostering critical thinking, enabling students to interpret cultural and social contexts while understanding the human and emotional aspects of user experience. Alongside this, the programme equips students with economic competencies, essential for navigating business and entrepreneurial contexts.

Technical and engineering subjects contribute to students training by providing the necessary skills to prototype interactive solutions and communicate effectively with technical professionals within interdisciplinary design teams. The programme also offers essential tools for digital representation, including virtual modelling.

In the first year, students develop fundamental knowledge in interaction design, programming, electronics, and prototyping, alongside core design principles. The second year introduces new themes such as data analysis and front-end development, with a strong focus on environmental and social impact, accessibility, and inclusivity in design choices. The third year aims to consolidate students’ knowledge, refine their critical thinking by incorporating ethical and social considerations, and encourage reflection on economic sustainability. In the final year, students further enhance their design skills by tackling medium to high-complexity projects.

Career opportunities and possible further education

The programme offers various career opportunities aligned with the design of interactive systems.

Graduates in Interaction Design will be able to design the interaction between users and products or systems, focusing on how users engage with a specific device or service, with the aim of making the experience more intuitive, effective, and enjoyable.

As User Experience Designers, they will be responsible for the overall experience a user has with a product or service, understanding user needs and behaviours, and designing solutions that meet these requirements while delivering a positive experience.

As User Interface Designers, they will focus on the visual and interactive aspects of a user interface. This includes the layout of elements, the use of colour, typography, and other visual aspects that ensure clarity and enhance the interaction between the user and the system.

As Information Architects, they will be responsible for organising and structuring information within a system or interface, ensuring that access to and navigation of information is intuitive and easy for users to understand.

Graduates may also find employment as Interactive Product Designers, working on the design of physical devices or services that incorporate interactive components, combining industrial design with digital elements.

Graduates will primarily work as freelancers or within professional studios, companies, public and private institutions, and organisations. As Interaction Designers, they may work in design and architecture studios, as well as in design consultancies. They may also find employment in companies operating in industrial design, consumer electronics, entertainment, and other sectors that require specialised design expertise.

Subject to evaluation of their curriculum, graduates in Interaction Design can continue their studies in related fields such as Digital and Interaction Design, Integrated Product Design, Product Service Systems Design.
